What you are about to read in this article is the summary of the technique I used to boost the sales of one of my clients by 72% within two months in August 2009. It is a simple yet powerful human ingenuity.
Grin-grin was the cry of my phone on the 4th day of may 2009 while I was relaxing in my house. I was celebrating my birthday (in my own way-relaxing) on that day so did not make quick move to get my phone. After about an hour, I heard the beep of SMS from my phone. This time around I read the message. The message reads “Hi Chinweike, a friend of yours gave me your credentials and I think you will help revive my Company- MD XYZ LTD. (I guess you understand why I used XYZ LTD to protect the privacy of the company). That was the beginning of my consulting for this company.
I took about one week to analyse the company’s business process and discovered they were all sound. I interviewed selected staff of the company to get more insight into the company’s activities and got even more convinced that the company ought to be doing well. What then is the problem you may ask- the front-desk staff lacks the necessary motivation to move the business forward. I worked with the front-desk staff for two weeks and noticed they do their work as every other company’s worker out there does theirs. There is no life in the way they rendered their services.
The following morning, I picked up my phone and called the MD of XYZ LTD and told him I have devised a solution to his company’s problem. Really, I can’t wait to host you in my office was his response. We slated to meet by 1.00pm on the 29th of June 2009.
Hello Mr. Chinweike, break the good news to me and my managers. Sir, WATCHING TV is the solution was my response. How do you mean? The staff will watch TV for about an hour I continued. You can imagine how infuriated this man got to the extent that he asked me to leave his office before he gets me arrested. You can trust me on that; I immediately left his office without thinking. Later that same day, my phone rang and what I heard was “let’s give it a trial”.
THE TECHNIQUE
I know you have been waiting for so long for this moment to come. Here we are. – we planted CCTV (Closed-Circuit Tele-vision) on the front-desk area without the knowledge of the staff. After about four days, we analysed the video and called the staff for a brief meeting. We made arrangement with one of the leading fast-food vendors in Nigeria to prepare eatery for the meeting/TV watching session.
For about an hour, the whole staff including the MD and my humble self was watching in rapt attention. This was followed by presentation of award to the best customer friendly staff as revealed by the video clip. That was the end of the meeting, no staff was reprimanded. And the MD gave me my fat Cheque for the consultancy service.
About two months later, precisely August 26th 2009, the MD called me on phone and said “it worked, the staff now overwhelm our customers with quality service and our sales has grown by a whooping 72% and still shows signs of growth-thanks a lot”
What can you now say about my TV approach of motivating your staff- your most valuable asset? Try it and let me know the result you get.
